Session Descriptions

Introduction to Islandora (Starter Site)

Presenters: Kirsta Stapelfeldt & Kyle Huyhn
Room: EV Room 140
New to Islandora and/or looking for a refresher? Attendees at this workshop will install and learn the basics of the Islandora Starter Site, including a high-level overview of Islandora’s basic architecture and feature set. Users are encouraged to complete basic tasks designed to support a mental model of Islandora.
Note: At Islandora Camp, some users had difficulties stemming from restrictions placed by their institutions on how they use their computers, as well as resource limitations (we recommend a minimum of 4GB that can be dedicated to the installation). To take full advantage, we recommend installing the Portainer Demo prior to the session. For users that are not able to install locally, most of the workshop will be suitable for completing in the Islandora Sandbox.

Resources

Developing in Islandora and Deploying to Production

Presenters: Rosie LeFaive & Natkeeran Ledchumykanthan
Room: Catalyst Centre
Islandora has multiple options for installing a local development environment and deploying to production. Learn about your options, from ISLE to Ansible, and how Islandora can support your use cases. This session will focus on practical demos and advice for institutions maintaining Islandora and developers that seek to develop and customize Islandora.

Resources

Community Onboarding

Presenters: Yamil Suárez & Rebecca Power
Room: EV Room 140
Just getting started with Islandora? Attend a community onboarding session where you can learn about the Foundation, governance model, and options for getting involved. See how Islandora uses Google Groups, GitHub and Slack to connect and collaborate. Users will learn about how the pieces of Islandora’s community come together, and be supported in joining and using Islandora’s communication channels.

Resources

Introduction to Islandora Workbench

Presenter: Mark Jordan
Room: Catalyst Centre
Islandora Workbench is a popular tool for managing content in an Islandora 2 repository. This hands-on workshop will allow participants to gain experience and confidence with Workbench, and to learn about how they can use it to maintain their repositories.
Note: Participants must have a laptop running Starter Site, either the Portainer Demo or Isle-Site Template.

Islandora Site and Feature Demos

Moderators: Marcus Barnes/Eric Luhrs
Room: Catalyst Centre
This session is meant to be an informal look at the latest launches to inspire and build community. Whether you are attending IslandoraCon or not–there’s a way you can participate!
Attendees:
If you are going to be attending IslandoraCon and are willing to do a very brief show-and-tell of your modern Islandora site, write kirsta.stapelfeldt@utoronto.ca to be added to the ‘open mike’ list.
If you are not going to be attending IslandoraCon but are willing to participate, please write kirsta.stapelfeldt@utoronto.ca with your preference for the following:

  1. Submitting a brief, pre-recorded video (<5 minutes)
  2. Joining a Zoom call with a member of the program committee (to be recorded and edited by us for use at the meeting)
  3. Presenting live (we will call you into the session currently scheduled for Tuesday, July 25 at 3p.m. EST)
Note: This is intended to be a recorded session that will be released to the community on YouTube.

Options for a smaller Islandora

Presenter: Cary Gordon
Room: EV Room 140
I propose a breakout for public libraries, small institutions, vendors to the same, and their friends to discuss current options. Since that landscape is changing as I type, I think that the agenda needs to be flexible, but anything in the realm of Islandora Lite or isle-site-template should be included.

Use-a-Thon Projects

What is a Use-a-Thon?
The Islandora Use-a-Thon is an opportunity to work with conference participants, learn new things, and configure Islandora to do something new! Even if you are new to Islandora, you are encouraged to join an existing Use-a-Thon in an area of interest to you. Use-a-Thons ideally pair people from different institutions with differing skill sets on a specific goal.

How does it work?
The latest version of Islandora is tightly integrated with Drupal, and very flexible, so many use cases can be solved with a combination of configuration and Drupal contributed modules.

How do you participate?

  1. Propose your idea!
    1. Is there something you want to learn how to do? Something you’ve been eager to understand how to do? Propose your idea for the Use-a-Thon or sign up for an existing idea!
  2. Meet with your team!
    1. Use-a-Thon projects will be introduced Tuesday, July 25, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Additional scheduled times are:
      1. Wednesday, July 26 9:30-10:30 a.m. & 5:30 p.m. (Use-a-Thon Pizza Party)
      2. Thursday, July 27 9:30-10:30 a.m. & 12:30-1:30 p.m.
  3. On Friday morning, representatives from each group are asked to present their outcomes.
